To Thalassino
means "the one by the sea", and that is true as the small restaurant is just some meters from the beach of  Pighianos Campos CreteIn front of the small seating area there is a roofed terrace which they close with large glass doors during the winter, so it allows all-year dining with sea view. |

The "Thalassino" is best known for the fresh fish and sea food that they serve.
Bogues, anchovies, sardines and sea breams straight from the Cretan Sea are available almost every day, and so are shrimps, prawn, lobster, mussels, octopus and squid. But they also serve a rich choice of fresh salads, appetizers, grilled dishes, Greek specialities, pizzas and pasta. |

The "Thalassino" is actually a taverna as they always offer 2 or 3 different dishes of the day.
But it is also possible to order à la carte.
This hybrid form of restaurant and taverna is rather frequent in Crete, mostly a little bit offside the large-scale holiday resorts. Pighianos Campos is such a place. Among the hotel suburbs of Rethymnon |

There is only one large and 3 smaller hotels, as well as a whole series of apartment facilities, and tourism runs here somehow more homely than e.g. in the neighbouring village of

Host Michalis Manousakis worked in several very well-known restaurants before going into business for himself, with the "Thalassino".
You will feel this immediately as here everything is somewhat different from the restaurants in the neighbouring village. In Adelianos Campos they specialized in catering a much larger number of guests withing short time, because of the demand over there. |

Table decorations are composed more lovingly, the "Kokkinisto" is not being served just on a plate but in a terracotta potty, and they even fold the napkins in a particular way.
The very difference at the "Thalassino" continues in the menu. It is much smaller than in most of the other restaurants in the area, because Michalis Manousakis uses to prepare and deep-freeze only very few components in advance. |

| He takes no stock in microwave ovens, but instead he prepares most of the food from fresh ingredients immediately after taking the order. | |||||||||

So you should prepare to bring enough of time with you, and please do not be surprised that the menu does not cover the whole bandwidth of international cuisine.
Instead, there is quite a range of sophisticated Cretan specialties, and the emphasis is on fresh fish and seafood: As after all, the taverna ist named "to Thalassino" - the one by the sea! |
